I’m very cautious
to say that our trial Spotlight newsletter is growing to a regular be-weekly – thanks
to my students and I’m happy about that! I’ve just uploaded Spotlight Two and
Spotlight Three for everyone to download and comment on…
This year March 7 and 8 - Monday and Tuesday -
are days of public holiday in Russia. But for men, it’s not a day to spend
relaxing in front of the TV.
International Women’s Day or as the holiday is
better known in Russia - the Eighth of March - is widely celebrated in
Russia – and men have been flocking to shops in search of bouquets and
gifts.
This is also one of the rare days when women
can expect men to don aprons and oven gloves, to cook up some surprises.
Ideally, for women the holiday means a day of
fun and games – away from the kitchen...and for teachers - greeting cards and flowers from their students and two days off from school....
Last
Thursday we were happy to meet an enthusiastic English teacher who came to Zlatoust for a few weeks to share his experience with the
local university students.
Jay
Gonzalez who speaks very good Russian gladly agreed to meet with my students
and colleagues in our Language Lab. Gulnara Khakimova, in charge of foreign
languages at Zlatoust branch of South Ural
State University,
accompanied Jay to our school. It was her application for a Fulbright English Language Assistant...
Here is what I would love to share with
everyone who comes here occasionally to visit the news page.
In
teaching/learning foreign languages, the cultural component is even more
important than what is related to grammar and vocabulary – to my mind. That is
why I see learning English as a process of cross-cultural communication, when
we try to see events and personalities in other culture through the prism of
our personal experience which is impacted by the culture we belong to very
much.
As I’ve got this morning the VOA News
Headlines in my mailbox as a subscriber, first thing that caught my eye was the
news that "Sunday, February 6, marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of
Ronald Reagan, America's 40th president.”
Everyone knows from own experience that learning foreign languages is a hard work which takes much time and efforts and might be quite different depending on the individual. No wonder there are so many teaching approaches to make it more fun and less time consuming.
I
do believe that along with other techniques any kind of creativie writing is extremely positive to
make language learning meaningful to school students. That's why I hope
this pilot issue of our Spotlight school newsletterwill grow bigger and become a regular monthly or even weekly(!).
Martin Luther King, Jr., original
name Michael King, Jr. (born January 15, 1929, Atlanta,
Ga., U.S.- died April 4, 1968, Memphis, Tenn.), Baptist minister and
social activist who led the civil rights movement in the United
States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968.
His
leadership was fundamental to that movement’s success in ending the legal segregation of African Americans in the
South and other parts of the United
States.
King rose to national prominence as
head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which promoted nonviolent tactics, such as the massive March on Washington (1963), to
achieve civil rights.
